One of the potential benefits being touted of pushing back an Australian F-35 JSF buy is that the RAAF will take delivery of later build, more mature aircraft that should also cost less due to being repositioned further down the production ‘cost curve’.
But is it really as simple as that? Prime contractor on the JSF program, Lockheed Martin says “no”. It claims that, if other countries are thinking the same way and end up deferring their deliveries because of the same reasons, the cost curve will only flatten out, thus delaying the cheaper aircraft further and making the earlier jets even more expensive.
