Register Review

The New Allocations listing this month contains a number of relatively new types as well as two never before seen in Australia – Morane-Saulnier Storch FIS and Piper 6XT BXT.

The German Fieseler Fi156 Storch first flew during 1936 and was a development of the F5 two-seat monoplane which featured a high wing with trailing-edge flaps and fixed, cantilever landing gear. The Fi156 was developed for slow speed flying and STOL into unprepared strips and is probably best remembered as the type that rescued Benito Mussolini from a hotel where he was being held captive by the Allies in the Gran Sasso mountain range during September 1943.

During the occupation of France and Czechoslovakia the Storch was built at the Morane-Saulnier factory at Puteaux, France, and at Mraz in Czechoslovakia. Storch production reached 2549 before the end of the war when the Fieseler factory was closed and the French and Czech facilities reverted to local production. Original Storches are extremely rare these days, but over the years there have been several attempts to emulate the basic design, including the once locally built Slepcev Storch.

Phillip Zamagias’s Piper 6XT BXT is a 2004 model obtained from Intermountain Air of Salt Lake City, Utah.

New Piper Inc embarked on a major model upgrade during 2003 after production had declined to a mere 229 units the previous year. The PA-28 Warrior III, Archer III and Arrow spearheaded the training and private sector thrust, Saratoga IIHP and IITC, Piper 6X and 6XT and Malibu the corporate single market and Seneca V and Seminole the light twin sector.

While several of these models were simply cosmetic upgrades of previous models, the 6X and 6XT were reintroductions of the fixed gear Cherokee Six which was discontinued in 1981. The 6XT is powered by a six cylinder, 300hp (225kW), fuel injected, turbocharged Lycoming driving a three blade, constant-speed Hartzell propeller. Performance is 172kt maximum speed, up to 931nm (1725km) range and a service ceiling of 20,000ft.

It has club style seating for six with a full leather option, whilst an Avidyne full glass instrument panel and Piper’s own de-icing system are also options.

At the extreme ends of the price and performance spectrum are Cessna 680 Citation EXA and American Champion Decathlon NEL.

EXA is the second Citation Sovereign to be brought to Australia by Executive Airlines at Essendon and arrived during December last year from long Beach via Kailua and Apia. The new aircraft will be based in Perth for corporate charter work while the first machine, EXG, will remain based at Essendon.

Aerobatics Australia is the local agent for American Champion aircraft and after importing two new Citabrias last year, ZCA and ZCB, the company has imported the first 2007 model Decathlon,NEL. The American Champion company can be traced back to its origins as the Aeronautical Corporation of America (Aeronca) which was formed in 1928. During 1954 Aeronca was re-formed into the Champion Aircraft Corporation and in 1970 the company’s assets were obtained by the Bellanca Aircraft Corporation. Under this banner the company progressed faster than ever, and upgraded existing models and introduced new models and experimented with completely new designs.

Unfortunately by 1980 the product liability laws in the US had all but strangled the aircraft industry and production of all Bellanca aircraft ceased. During November 1982 the type certificates, tooling and 26 partially completed aircraft were sold to B and B Aviation of Texas through a bankruptcy sale, but after only finishing a very few of the partial airframes all rights and parts were sold to Jerry Mehlhaf who formed American Champion Aircraft.

American Champion now produces five basic designs, the 8KCAB Super Decathlon with a 190hp (141kW) Lycoming engine, the 8GCBC Scout with 180hp (135kW) Lycoming, the 7ECA Aurora, 7GCAA Adventure and the 7GCBC Explorer.

Six of the eight entries in the Aircraft Returning to Register section this issue are back on the register after the Part 47 ‘clear out’, while Lloyd Off-Shore Helicopters/CHC (Australia) Bell 212 LHL and Pacific Crown Helicopters Squirrel TVS have returned from Canada and Papua New Guinea respectively.

LHL spends six months of the year in Canada and the other six months in Australia each year fighting bushfires, and as a result has appeared in the deletions section and the restoration section each year for the past six years.

Five aircraft are shown in the Deletions listing as a result of accidents, the most publicised being Strikemaster AKY which crashed near Bathurst during October with the loss of two lives. One month after the loss of the Strikemaster, Yak-18T TMK was destroyed by fire shortly after landing at Batchelor, NT, during another warbird familiarisation flight. The Russian built Yak had only been flying in this country for two months prior to the accident and luckily both occupants escaped the fire without serious injuries.

Of the 11 exports, Metro 23 UUD has gone to Bolivia and Eurocopter Colibri JAS in now in Poland. Closer to home Cessna 172 EHA is now resident in New Zealand flying as ZK-EHA with Gaming Inc of Hamilton, Bell Longranger TCE is now active in Papua New Guinea and Pawnee Brave HKD and Aztec JMO have both gone to the Philippines.

National Jet Systems BAe 146 NJJ has returned to its birthplace and taken up its previous British markings of G-BTKC. Although the 146 is now registered to Trident Aviation Leasing Services of Jersey, Channel Islands, the aircraft was ferried to Farnborough, England, where it will be stored until its future is decided.

Three aircraft have been exported to the US, Virgin Airlines Boeing 737 VOJ, Beech Staggerwing UUV and Hawker Fury HFG. The Staggerwing was brought to Australia for re-sale and as On the other side of the world Pakistan International Airlines grounded its fleet of Fokker Friendships in July last year after an accident claimed 45 lives. The six aircraft involved in the grounding included four Australian examples, and PIA are now advertising them for sale, as is, where is. The four aircraft, Ansett’s FNA, FNM and FNP along with TAA’s TFW, have not flown since the accident and the latter was recently damaged by high winds. The Friendships seem unlikely to fly again.

On a more positive note Squirrel LEW, which flew in Australia between 1985 and 1989 before being exported to New Caledonia, is now in Bolivia flying as CP-2446 with HeliAmerica of Santa Cruz, and CASA 212 ICJ has recently been delivered to Turbine Services in Kenya.

The CASA flew with Jet Corporation, Transecutive Airlines and Lloyd Aviation while in Australia between May 1982 and April 1995, after which it went to Sweden as SE-LDC. Turbine Services’s main offices are in Nairobi but the CASA, now registered 5Y-TSL, is based at Lokichoggio where it serves several aid agencies that operate in Southern Sudan.

Eurocopter EC 120 YAZ, which was listed in the August deletions, is now known to be operating with Helipool Europe at Paspels, Switzerland, as HB-ZHV, and Socata TB-10 XBE, shown in the same issue, is now flying as 9M-KCT with KC Tan of Subang, Malaysia.

Canadian Home Rotors Safari MPS has turned up on the New Zealand register as ZK‑IRH owned by RH Hawkins of Whangarei and Gippsland Airvan RMK, which went to the UK during 2006 as G-VANB, has now moved on to Holland where it flies as PH-KMR with Kamm Air of Delft.
