Commercial Boeing 737 Production Up Again
Increased market demand has resulted in Boeing announcing a further increase in production of its 737 family of jet airliners. The increase will take the 737’s production rate from 10 per month in January 1997 to 12 by the second quarter of the year, 15 in the fourth quarter and 17 by the beginning of 1998. The increase is good news for Australian industry as Hawker de Havilland builds ailerons for the 737
Fairchild Plans Stretched 328
Following its recent acquisition of a majority shareholding in Dornier, Fairchild is planning a series of improvements to the Dornier 328 33-seat regional turboprop, including a stretched 50-seat version. The 328 has at best been only a modest seller and has been described as a financial disaster for Dornier, which was forced to sell the aircraft at substantially below cost price. Before the Fairchild takeover, Dornier was owned by the Dornier family (42.45%) and DASA (57.55%). Fairchild now has 80% of the company, despite an attempt by Dornier family shareholders to veto the move. DASA would probably have shut the company down had Fairchild not made its bid.
