Boeing recently delivered the 25th 777 (to ANA, pictured), little more than a year after the first 777 was delivered to United Airlines. Boeing is currently building two 777s per month, with this rate set to rise to three and a half per month by the end of the year. At the time of writing total firm 777 orders stood at 268. (Boeing)

Pw4090 Certificated
The 90,000lb (403kN) thrust Pratt & Whitney PW4090 turbofan has been granted both type and production certificates by the US FAA. The most powerful member of the PW4000 family is now cleared for flight testing aboard the Boeing 777 and entry to service on increased gross weight versions of the aircraft in March next year. The first PW4090 was run in July 1995 and has subsequently undergone 1,200 hours of testing. Like its predecessor, the PW4084, P&W plans to have the new engine enter service with full 180 minutes ETOPS approval. The next member of the family will be the 98,000lb (489kN) thrust PW4098, tests of which are due to begin next October with entry to service planned for 1998
Mdc Strike Forces Temporary Hirings
A machinists strike at McDonnell Douglas has forced the company to hire temporary replacement employees at its St Louis plant. This is to ensure that production commitments will be met during the strike and also involves temporarily transferring some fabrication, subassembly, tooling and service work to certified subcontractors and other McDonnell Douglas locations. As previously announced, the plan also includes getting 5,000 St Louis employees into production positions within a short space of time. More than 2,500 employees with production and engineering expertise have already been transferred to production positions.
