Kiwi v Freedom Air Battle Continues

For a year now one of the fiercest and most competitive airline battles has been raging in the skies between Australia and New Zealand. This is the war between the two new entrants in the trans-Tasman market: Kiwi International Airlines and Freedom Air International. Kiwi was the first new entrant in the market offering low-priced fares from Hamilton to Sydney. This move was closely imitated by Air New Zealand subsidiary Freedom Air who entered the market in December 1995, only three months after Kiwi had launched services on the same route. Since then both Kiwi and Freedom Air have expanded their services to a number of routes across the Tasman

One of the initial features of Kiwi was its Nuts ‘n’ Cola class which provides basic economy class service without a meal but with unlimited peanuts and soft drink. Freedom Air has countered this by offering full economy class with meals at the same low price as Kiwi’s.
