The Obvious First Step Towards Easing Congestion (And Noise) At Sydney Is To Cut The Number Of Aircraft Movements. (Rob Finlayson)
Canberra Airport: A Satellite for KSA?
Canberra Airport: A Satellite for Kingsford Smith Airport
Millions of dollars have been spent, and probably millions of words written, on the selection and development of the second Sydney airport. A simple and conventional transportation strategy has been invoked: estimate when Kingsford Smith Airport (KSA) will run out of capacity, then find a place to build a completely new airport facility. What if there is an alternative strategy that would achieve the objective of providing comprehensive passenger access to Sydney and Australia, but at a cost that is a small fraction of the price of a new airport built in the already overcrowded Sydney air basin?
An alternative strategy proposed is this: analyse passenger demand in eastern Australia and then use KSA for high-value flights and find ways of meeting demand for transport in other ways and at other locations. This approach has successfully been used to extend the throughput of Heathrow and minimise the national cost of air transport.
