Out with the old and in with the new as they say. Airbus' aging fleet of Super Guppies (seen in the background alongside the A330/340 production facility) are gradually being replaced by Airbus' very own A300-600ST Super Transporter. These monstrous aircraft are used to transport aircraft assemblies from the various manufacturers to the Airbus final assembly line at Toulouse. (Airbus)

Airbus Future Developments

Airbus Industrie is continuing on a series of new and improved developments to ensure its future. As the world’s second largest airframer, Airbus has a current range of eight aircraft including the A300-600ST SuperTransporter, which earned certification recently. Airbus is also increasing its worldwide customer support base with the opening of a new training, support, and spares centre in China. Also, the addition of new spares centres around the world offers even greater service to Airbus operators.

The plan for Airbus into the future is to capture 50% of the total airliner market by the year 2000. With its already advanced range of airliners, Airbus looks set to achieve this with new developments of existing models and the planned 747 replacement, the A3XX. For this year, Airbus has so far claimed a total market share of 40% (139 orders), with some airliner markets (e.g., 777 vs A330/340) being very competitive indeed.
