Fokker Bankruptcy Analysis

Fokker Shuts Its Doors

Amsterdam, March 15, 1996 – “At the request of Fokker’s administrators, the District Court of Amsterdam has retracted the suspension of payments provisionally granted to the companies NV Koninklijke Nederlandse Vliegtuigenfabriek Fokker, Fokker Aircraft BV and Fokker Administration BV and declared them to be in a state of bankruptcy. The former administrators have been appointed as receivers”. With this announcement came the end of one of the world’s greatest and longest-lasting aircraft manufacturers after a period of heavy losses, changes of ownership, reorganization and uncertainty. Fokker’s closure is filled with irony as it comes at a time when there is a reasonably healthy backlog of 65 orders for its regional airliners worth over $US1.4bn.

Fokker’s bankruptcy brings to an end 77 years of aircraft manufacturing in the Netherlands and will result in all 5,664 of the insolvent companies’ employees losing their jobs. About 950 of these will be offered positions with the several Fokker operating groups which will continue trading under the auspices of a new company, the Fokker Aviation Group. They are Fokker Aircraft Services (repair and overhaul, holder of Fokker’s various Type Certificates), Fokker Elmo (electrical and electronic components for the aviation industry), and Fokker Special Products (industrial products).
