Singapore Airline’s massive order for up to 77 Boeing 777s worth up to $US12.7bn took many observers by surprise, but is indicative of the financial strength and high growth rates experienced by the world’s second most profitable airline.
Broken down, the 777 order comprises 28 firm and 33 options for Singapore Airlines, plus six firm and 10 options for the airline’s newly established leasing subsidiary, Singapore Aircraft Leasing Enterprise. Regardless, the order was the single largest placed with an airline manufacturer in 1995, the equal second largest order for the 777 yet, and Singapore Airline’s largest ever aircraft order. Such a massive commitment is a reaffirmation of the airline’s forecasts of strong economic and traffic growth in the Asia region, and in its product and in its own ability to continue its enviable track record as one of the world’s few consistently profitable airlines. Singapore Airlines traces its origins back to Malayan Airlines, which began operations between Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Penang flying Airspeed Consuls. Malayan Airlines became Malaysian Airlines in 1963 when Malaysia (then including Singapore) gained independence. When Singapore elected to leave the Malaysian federation in 1966 the airline was renamed Malaysia-Singapore Airlines. In 1971 Malaysia-Singapore Airlines was split up, leaving in its wake Malaysian Airline System and Singapore Airlines.
In 1971 the fledgling Singapore Airlines was equipped with a small fleet of ex Qantas Boeing 707s. Expansion was rapid and aggressive to the stage where today it is the world’s second most profitable airline, the 13th largest in terms of revenue passenger kilometres, the largest international carrier to and from Australia outside of Qantas and Air New Zealand and the operator of a modern fleet of over 40 747s (with 16 more on order) and 23 A310s.
