Skyrace 96 Report

For most 1996 air race fans the big questions were where were the T-28s? Where was Bob Hoover? Where were the much publicised Yaks from America and where were the Unlimited class entrants? Clear cut questions but clear cut answers were not to be had in all cases.

Air race fans had waited a whole year for the third Country Club Casino Skyrace Tasmania to take place at Valleyfield, south of Launceston. During that time media reports and even the 1996 programme featured photos of big radials, both in the air and on the ground, taken at previous events. One could rightly expect to see these aircraft types at this year’s race but this was not to be.

The 1996 Tasmanian Skyrace marked a turning point in the local air race scene. Absent were the T-28 Trojan race aircraft and also absent were piston engined entrants in the Unlimited class. After the initial excitement of the first two years the expectation of most race fans was the 1996 would see a jet race and that there would be a continuation of the T-28 races as well as more entrants in the T-6 class. There was a jet race but that was all.
