The first Lockheed C-5B Galaxy was delivered to the USAF’s 443rd MAW at Altus AFB, Oklahoma on January 8 following the completion of a 66 hour flight demonstration programme in 15 flights. During the pre-delivery testing, the aircraft reached a 37,000ft (11,278m) altitude, a speed of 395kt (732km/h) attained, and takeoff weight of 360,610kg (795,000lb).

The Airbus board agreed on January 27 to continue development of the twin-engined A330 and four-engined A340, previously known as TA-9 and TA-11 respectively. The Airbus chairman Jean Pierson has previously said these two new types are required to complete the Airbus range.
