Oh! What a Great Idea…

The airline industry is indeed an amazing animal. The entire industry at times seems to be so focused on what others are doing that it often misses the boat in terms of seeking to improve its lot by grasping opportunities of its own creation. A classic example of this is the blatant (read pathetic) plagiarism of Kiwi Travel International’s product by Air New Zealand under the paper thin disguise of Mount Cook’s Freedom Air.

Readers will no doubt be fully up to speed with the excellent performance being displayed by Kiwi (refer p24 Nov 95 AA), a new start run by real thinkers rather than egomaniacs quick to blame the rest of the world for their perceived woes. Kiwi management believed that there was a market for travel between secondary ports in New Zealand and Australia. Ansett, Qantas and Air New Zealand obviously thought this an incredibly absurd idea or otherwise one of them would have done something about it in recent years. Kiwi was of course 110% right and as usual the establishment carriers were noteworthy for their incredible lack of perception.
