General Aviation Commences Firefighting Caravan

In what may be of interest to Australian operators, especially now the bushfire season is upon us, California-based aerial firefighting specialist Aero Union is developing a system for the Cessna Caravan utility turboprop. Aero Union will be working with Cessna on the project and also with Soloy, whose twin PT6 turboprop DualPac (driving through a single propeller) conversion is likely to form the basis of the firefighting variant. Aero Union’s Caravan Retardant Aerial Delivery System (C-RADS) has a computer-controlled door system offering multiple flow combinations which can be selected by the pilot. Capacity of the system is 1898 l (500 US gal) and the tank and operating mechanism can be removed when not in use.

Gulfstream V Flies

The first of the ‘new generation’ very long range business jets, the Gulfstream V, recorded its maiden flight at Savannah, Georgia, on November 28 1995. With a 6500nm (12,030km) range flying at Mach 0.8, the GV will provide direct nonstop capability on routes such as New York/Tokyo, LA/Sydney, Paris/Jakarta, London/Singapore and Jeddah/Washington. The GV is the first application for the new BMW Rolls-Royce BR710 turbofan and Gulfstream has an order backlog worth over $US2bn for the aircraft. Four Gulfstream Vs will be used in the flight test and certification programme which is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 1996 with first deliveries following immediately afterwards.
