1996 Annual Flying Training Directory
1996 Australian Aviation Flying Training Directory
The Australian flying training industry went through a boom in the 1980s, with total fly ing training hours in ing training hours in n 1983 to 480,000 in 1990
This 4% average decline in flying training activity was not uniform across the states. The worst performer was South Australia, which suffered a 24% decline. NSW and Queensland also did worse than the national average, with each showing a decline of 8%. Victoria did better, managing to hold down the rate of decline to around 3%, while Western Australia actually experienced 12% growth.
Anecdotal evidence from around the flying schools during the past year has not provided any encouraging news. Indeed, it appears that the industry is likely to remain largely in its current size and structure for the foreseeable future. Flying schools, both large and small, will need to learn to survive in the current economic environment, as the golden age of the late 1980s is unlikely to return in a hurry.
