Red Hell Sssa
A flight from Moscow to Irkutsk via Omsk was an amazing event. The domestic airport at Domodedovo is about 50 kilometres on the other side of Moscow from the international airport. The public section is apparently so abysmal that our organiser tried to get us into the InTourist departure ‘lounge’. After much haggling, this was achieved. Our coach then drove through a guarded gate onto the tarmac. As it proceeded towards the lounge, a large domestic aircraft — a Tupolev 154 trijet — was landing on the runway less than a hundred metres to our right alongside the road we were on with no separating fence! A noisy and frightening experience.
We then disembarked from our transport and walked across part of the tarmac through dingy, unlit passageways to a very grubby assembly area with about a dozen seats for at least 100 people. Our guide took at least 45 minutes to negotiate our 16 tickets and he was given our seat numbers on a torn scrap of paper. After more negotiations, we were taken to an upstairs lounge which was a little more presentable and also had a shop.
