Former Faa Atc Chief Tohead Asa
A former chief of the United States air traffic control system, Mr William Pollard, has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of AirServices Australia. Mr Pollard has had a 30 year career with the US Federal Aviation Administration including six years as Associate Administrator for Air Traffic with responsibility for an annual $US2bn budget and 26,000 employees. He was responsible for the management of all US air traffic control facilities and personnel and for the development of national policies, procedures and standards. He holds a pilot’s licence and started his FAA career in 1964 as an air traffic controller.
Mr Pollard’s Australian career has started with a hint of controversy even before his arrival following a statement that cross runway operations are not necessarily unsafe. This is in direct contradiction to the Federal Government’s politically motivated stance re Sydney Airport, and it was interesting to note that a ‘clarifying’ statement was quickly issued!
