Qantas Reports Healthy 94/95 Result
In a result that has boosted market confidence, Qantas has posted a net profit of $180.1m for 1994/95, an increase of 15.5% on the previous year’s $155.9m, reports Julian Green. On announcing the results, Qantas Chairman Gary Pemberton, said that “The results show that we are on track with the forecast published in the prospectus.” The announcement of the improved performance was warmly received by the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX), which saw shares rise sharply to close at $2.25, the second highest level since trading commenced on July 31. Shareholders will receive a 3.5 cent fully franked dividend.
Mr Pemberton attributed much of the improved result to the company’s continued cost cutting programmes, which saved around $70m during 1994/95. He said that Qantas was committed to saving a further $300m in the current period, though this would not involve any “slash and burn” reductions of staff numbers, though “patience would be needed.” “The savings have come from being smarter,” Mr Pemberton said.
