Update — Embraer EMB-145
Embraer Emb-145
August saw another step forward in the history of Brazil’s Embraer with the successful first flight and official rollout of the 50 seat EMB-145 regional twinjet.
Initial planning for the -145 began in the late eighties when Canadair announced a stretched development of its 601 series Challenger aimed squarely at the commuter and hub bypass market. Saab responded quickly with a stretched development of the 340 only using powerful turboprops in place of the turbofans favoured by Canadair. Recognising this emerging potential market, Embraer moved quickly to float the idea of a jet development of its successful 30 seat Brasilia.
However, in hindsight the project got off to a premature start with a basic design that had the engines mounted above the wings. Not only did the design look odd but in windtunnel and computer testing it just didn’t work as advertised. The engines were then moved to beneath the wings, like a baby 737, and this too was discarded largely due to the lack of ground clearance available with such a design. Embraer then went back to basics and following experience gained on the commercially ill-fated CBA-123 Vector programme it decided to mount two turbofans on the tail with the result that the definitive -145 looks like a shrunken MD-90.
