On the Airbands

Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport

Each year, as I travel throughout the USA and Canada, I am amazed at the huge amount of traffic seen at major hub airports in those countries. In the USA in particular, Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport, in Georgia would have to rank as one of the busiest. Chicago’s O’Hare International, LAX and New York’s JFK are just the same, with O’Hare perhaps regularly taking the ‘honours’ for being the absolute busiest re movements in the air and on the ground per hour. It may be a little way “down the list”, but Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport is an amazing place to be, with its parallel runways accommodating long and continuous lines of arriving and departing aircraft at minimum tail-to-nose separation landing one after the other.

The airport also has an underground computer controlled transit system that has to be ridden on to be believed. It is a high-speed link from terminal to terminal, designed to quickly cover the huge distances involved. Passengers have to hang on tight to avoid falling over during the short journeys. Delta Airlines also have its huge base at Atlanta, and there is a lot of company activity at the airport to monitor. With the Olympics in Atlanta during 1996, airband monitoring at Hartsfield International Airport by visitors should prove a very popular away-from-the-Games pursuit!
