GPS On Track!

The recent GNSS/GPS for Aviation seminar held in Brisbane, revealed some important aspects of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) implementation process. The CAA (now CASA and AirServices Australia or ASA), formed the original GNSS Implementation Team (GIT) in 1993. GIT includes a group of enthusiastic aviation bureaucrats, determined to see satellite technology as the key to air navigation in this country. Unfortunately, CASA’s management structure and workload-to-staff ratio is standing in the way of speedy implementation of this much sought after technology.

Demand for certification and approval of GPS procedures is causing frustration among some operators. To address this dissatisfaction, GIT was reformed last year and now includes representation from the industry, those who stand to benefit from GPS exploitation – airlines, airport operators, flying associations, charter and commuter operators, aeromedical units and equipment manufacturers. Working groups within GIT are addressing GNSS implementation on a priority basis.
