Undersea Aircraft Recovery
The big news of the month is the discovery of a veritable air force of aircraft reported found on the sea bed of the Queensland Sunshine Coast. In what amounts to an enthusiast’s dream come true, Melbourne diver Don Dennis has found what he reports to be a large number of aircraft sitting on the sea bed in 300m of water.
To explain this story one must cast the clock back to the end of WWII. The east coast airfields of Australia were cluttered with surplus aircraft. Some of these aircraft had little more than factory test time on them. RAAF aircraft were sold off and in the main the fighters and bombers were smelted down for the metals that they contained.
