June, 1945. 50 Years Ago…

June 1 – Australia.

To support of the forthcoming OBOE 6 Operation – capture of Labuan island, north Borneo, planned for the 10th as part of the OBOE series to establish mutually supporting bases covering the Asian mainland from Singapore to Shanghai – Western and North Western Areas are to conduct long range attacks against Japanese installations in eastern Java and the southern Celebes. Also, the North Western Area is to continue minelaying operations and maintain the air blockade of the Macassar Strait, Celebes, Arafura, Timor, Banda and Flores Seas. Night after night, Catalinas mine Surabaya harbour and the Banka Strait. Other Catalinas and Liberators harass Malang airfield and airfields in the Celebes. Tonight, three Catalinas from 20 Squadron mine Hong Kong harbour.

June 2 – Australia.

F/Lt N Johnston & F/O H Williamson of 87 Squadron in Mosquito A52-600 bring back photographs confirming the existence of several Japanese medium bombers in a gully near Timor’s Cape Chater airfield, a potential threat to northern Australian bases.
