Uncle Arthur Visits The Airport!

A few years ago, a DC-10, after dispatch from the gate and taxiing for takeoff, was observed to have an access panel open on the forward part of the aircraft. To save time, two employees of the airline were transported out to the taxiway in a safety vehicle to secure the aircraft’s panel. When the car arrived at the now stationary DC-10, it was positioned beneath the aircraft. One employee got onto the car roof while the other employee gave the crew a ‘thumbs up’ signal (meant to advise the DC-10 crew that they were going up to close the panel).

The signal was acknowledged by the crew but naturally interpreted to mean that the panel had been closed. The employee who gave the ‘thumbs up’ signal then went over to the car and saw that the employee on the roof could not reach the access panel, so he got up onto the roof and onto the other employee’s shoulders to be able to reach the panel.
