Jindalee Over The Horizon Radar (Othr) Jindalee Over The Horizon Radar (Othr) sees over the horizon by transmitting a radar signal upwards. The signals are refracted by the ionosphere, about 200 km above the Earth's surface, then downwards to illuminate the target, be it ship or aircraft. The target's echo travels by a similar path back to a receiver. Received data is processed by high-powered computers and turned into usable tracking information in real time.

ATC Facilities For Darwin
Siemens Plessey Electronic Systems Pty Ltd (SPES) has been awarded a $1.05 million contract by the Royal Australian Air Force to upgrade and enhance the Darwin ATC radar system. The Siemens Jaralama ATM system to be installed at Darwin will be a fully integrated operational system and will replace the existing radar screens with high quality, full color displays. Jaralama (an Aboriginal word meaning “to search”) is a low-cost data processing and display system which is designed to run on commercial, off-the-shelf, POSIX-compliant platforms. Jaralama is the Australian derivative of the successful AP-100 product developed by Siemens Plessey Systems in the UK. The system will be networked and will provide workstations in both the tower and approach control environments.
The system can provide single or multiple radar data processing facilities. Operational features include full data labels, minimum safe altitude warning and short-term conflict alert, flight plan database, code/callsign correlation, and user-definable mapping. The software to be used in the Darwin installation is based on that developed for a similar system installed by SPES at RAAF Base Pearce in Western Australia last year.
