Pratt & Whitney has completed flight testing of its improved PW2000 engine mounted aboard a Condor 757 (refer p9 Mar '94 AA). The improvement package enhances turbine durability, increases engine time on wing up to 20,000 hours and can potentially cut maintenance costs by as much as 22% by reducing the combuster exit temperature. Advanced materials and thermal barrier coatings and cooling in the new package significantly increase the PW2000's durability. (P&W)

Details of Sst Engine Revealed:
Rolls-Royce and Snecma have unveiled details of a joint study they have been undertaking into engines for the next generation of supersonic airliners.
The four year study has concluded that a mid tandem fan variable cycle engine would be the most suitable powerplant. This configuration has been deemed the most applicable as it combines the characteristics of a turbofan for takeoff, landing and subsonic cruise, and a turbojet, which is best suited for supersonic flight.
