The airline deregulation scene in Australia continues to head down the same path as taken by so many airlines in North America. Our industry is now dominated by two large carriers while there appears little or no chance of any new airline commencing operations.
The period under review has perhaps seen the greatest shakeout ever of the airline scene in Australia. As we forecast last year Ansett Express, Ansett WA, Australian, Compass and Eastwest all appear in our Directory for the last time. While only Compass has disappeared completely from our skies the aircraft, routes and staff of Ansett Express, Ansett WA, Australian and Eastwest have been absorbed by Ansett Australia and Qantas. These two carriers are now dominant both in Australia and in our part of the world.
Ansett Australia has swallowed up Ansett Express, Ansett WA and Eastwest Airlines. The Ansett Express scene is slightly complicated as for marketing purposes the Ansett Express name will still be retained on some aircraft even though the airline itself has no staff. The inclusion of the aircraft fleets of Ansett Express, Ansett WA and Eastwest under the Ansett Australia name increases their fleet numbers from 38 to 74 which is a 95% rise since our last Directory. Ansett fleet numbers are expected to increase further in the next twelve months as a decision is made on what type or types they will order to operate their international services to points in South East Asia.
