Defence Update – AEW&C Studies Underway

Project Definition Study to List Options on Aew&C Acquisition

The Australian Defence Force has moved to improve its so far limited practical knowledge of Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) operations by using exchange postings to train a number of Air Defence Officers in the United States and Britain.

After two decades of frustration though deferral of AEW&C acquisition proposals, the ADF is embarking on a 15 month Project Definition Study (PDS) on renewed plans to acquire AEW&C systems and platforms. Its first phase will establish whether AEW&C is the best way to conduct surveillance and control of Australia’s air and sea ap- proaches and over the off shore territories. If, as expected, that gets a tick, the second phase of the PDS will develop the concept of how the system would contribute to Defence roles across a whole range of other operational functions apart from air defence, the options and costs.
