As expected, the Royal Navy has ordered 18 new build Sea Harrier FRS.2s from British Aerospace. The 18 FRS.2s will be delivered from 1995, and are in addition to the 31 existing FRS.1s (pictured) that are being upgraded to the new standards. The upgraded and new build aircraft will differ from the earlier FRS.1s in having a 35cm stretched fuselage, a recontoured nose housing a Ferranti Sea Vixen multi mode pulse doppler radar, compatibility with the A/M-120 AMRMM and a redesigned cockpit featuring two multi function Head Down Displays (HOO). The first converted FRS.2 was handed back to the Royal Navy on April 2 1993.

Ilyushin to Phase Out II-86 Production:

Canadair has bucked a recent trend among airliner manufacturers through increasing the production rate of its Regional Jet from two to three aircraft per month. The increased production rate is tn response to a recent sales surge for the RJ, with large orders coming from Air Canada, Lauda Air and SkyWest. Canadair now holds 69 firm orders for the Regional Jet of which 29 had been delivered at the time of writing.

With the re-engining of the Ilyushin 86 with CFM56s now highly unlikely and future sales prospects poor, production is likely to cease after current commitments are met in 1995.

Only 100 I1-86s have been built thus far, the type’s inefficient Kuznetsov turbofans proving to be its downfall, with only Stage II noise compliance and worse than expected range. Ilyushin instead is electing to concentrate on the Stage III compliant II-96, which recently entered service with Aeroflot, and the westernised II-96-300, which is powered by Pratt & Whitney 2000 turbofans, and has western avionics and fly-by-wire control systems.
