Flight Impressions – Sukhoi Su-29
Sukhoi Su-29
Sukhoi! To many people the name conjures up images of a Russian high performance aircraft. It certainly does to me and in this case it conjures up an image of one of the highest performing aerobatic aircraft in the world. ie: The Sukhoi Su-26/29.
Since commencing competition aerobatics two years ago, I have lusted after a ride in one of these head spinning machines. After the last NSW State Aerobatic Championships, Nigel Arnot of Ultimate Aerobatics, the first Australian owner, and sole Australian distributor of the Sukhoi Su-26/29, made me an offer I could not refuse. ‘Come out to Camden and we’ll take if for a fly’.
The Sukhoi Su-29 is the two seat version of the Sukhoi Su- 26 unlimited class aerobatic aeroplane, enabling it to be used for dual training, airshows and competition aerobatics. It is a relatively large monoplane, for an aerobatic machine, and has a wing with a fully symmetric aerofoil section, attached at zero incidence and zero dihedral to the fuselage. This ensures similar positive and negative angle of attack flight characteristics, essential for unlimited class aerobatics.
