Australian Farewells the Boeing 727
Australian Airlines bid farewell to the last Boeing 727 in its fleet on December 9, when a special ceremony was held at Melbourne Airport before a gathering of retired and current staff members.
Trans Australia/Australian Airlines has had an association with the Boeing 727 for nearly 30 years so it’s no wonder that the trijet has a special place with the staff of the airline. The final Boeing 727-276 to depart was VH-TBO which was the last of seven Boeing 727-276s sold to the Mexican charter opera- tor Aeroejecutivo. Trans Australia/Australian Airlines took delivery of 18 727 aircraft off the Boeing production line at Seattle (six Boeing 727-100s and 12 Boeing 727-276s). A further five aircraft (two Boeing 727-100s and three Boeing 727-200s) were operated on lease. TAA operated its first service with Boeing 727-76 VH-TJA on November 2 1964 and Australian operated the last service with Boeing 727-276 VH-TBR on December 31 1992. In the intervening 28 years the 18 727s flew 743,535 hours, made 557,344 cycles and carried over 52 million passengers.
