Airbus Targets 747-400:
For the first time publicly, Airbus has claimed that its A340 is a direct competitor of Boeing’s highly successful 747-400.
As outlined by David Pound, Airbus’ Group Manager Product Evaluation, at its annual Technical Press Briefing, the A340’s smaller capacity and better operating economics means that over many 747 sectors, the A340 is more suitable and has a better profit earning potential. Because of its smaller seating capacity, airlines would still be able to seat the same number of high yield first, business and full fare economy passengers, without the need to offer heavily discounted economy fares to fill the rest of the aircraft. On a typical Syd/LA nonstop, an A340 would cost around 40% less to fly in direct operating cost terms than a 747-400.
