American carrier, Kiwi International Air Lines, based in New Jersey, is quite confident that the Romanian Goverment can raise sufficient finance to place the Rolls-Royce Tay 650 powered BAC One-Eleven 500 into production. The two parties have an agreement which will see Romania Invest $US1M into Kiwi, while the airline will launch the aircraft with 11 firm orders plus five options. Romaero already has two airframes dating back to the Rombac Spey 1-11 days, which could allow a first fight by the end of 94. The programme could be delayed though as Alenia through Dee Howard is embroiled in a legal dispute with BAe over its abandoned Tay conversion of the 1-11-400 (pictured), which affects who holds the supplemental type certificate, and therefore who will be able to aid Romaero with certification (Bruce Malcolm)

Qantas Hoping for More 777:
Looking towards the latter years of this decade, Qantas is hoping that Boeing will greatly increase the payload/ range capabilities of its 777 so that it will be better able to satisfy Qantas’ mission requirements.
Speaking with AA, Qantas managing director, Mr John Ward, stated that as far as Qantas was concerned, the A version of the 777 was really just a regional aircraft when fully loaded. The B version, which features greater range than the A series model, was also still greatly payload/range limited in Qantas’ eyes. What was needed, said Mr Ward, was a C version able to fly with a full passenger load outto ranges beyond 6000nm (11,100km). Boeing is looking to develop a C version though this won’t be available till around 1998 at the earliest.
