Bottom Line

Aerospatiale has reported a net profit of FFrbn213m ($A50. lm) for 1991 with a 16% rise in sales, mainly in aircraft and to a lesser extent in helicopter sales. This is a marked improvement over the 1990 loss of FFr396mn ($A93. 2bn). The group’s Chairman, in reporting a successful year for 1991, said that the group had focused on laying the foundations for the future through innovation, modernisation and restructuring. • Hawker de Haviland Ltd has reported a net profit of $700,000 for the December year compared with $11. 0m previously. The group’s sales increased by only 2. 1% to $287. 7m. The poor performance resulted from a mixture of industrial relations problems, the state of the domestic market for repair and overhaul, and production problems. • Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd has reported a $HK3,653m ($A62lm) operating profit for the year ended December 31, 1991, on revenues of $HK20,935m ($A3,560m). The results are slightly down on the same period last year and were influenced by the Gulf War and the worldwide recession. • The Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company (HAECO) has reported a 12. 8% increase in turnover for the year to December 31, 1991, to $HK1,806. lm ($A307m). Profits rose 10. 8% to $HK320. 6m ($A54. 5m). The result reflects an increase in airframe and engine maintenance demand from overseas customers In April 1991, H AECO acquired 29. 1% in ASTA Aircraft Services, which provides heavy aircraft maintenance at its Avalon airport facility.

The Decisive Factor:

David Wilson 1992 sees the 50th anniversary of many World War II actions which were of great significance to Australia, particularly in the New Guinea area. The Decisive Factor deals with two of them, the role played by the RA AF’s Nos 75 and 76 Squadrons in the defence of Port Moresby and at Milne Bay. Both battles were vital in those desperate days when Australia itself was threatened. No 75 Squadron’s Kittyhawks were tasked with defending Port Moresby in March 1942 and held out for 44 days before being forced to withdraw, in the meantime

Oshkosh Tour Is Cheapest Ever

That’s right, our 1992 AA/Torii Tours Oshkosh/USA aviation tour is our cheapest ever. Research has shown the while generally interesting, New York was not considered a major highlight in previous tours. New York is also the most expensive port of call so this year we have bypassed the Big Apple to allow additional time in Florida, Seattle and Dayton. Areas where some extra time can always be used to advantage. The best news though is that by leaving out NY the tour comes in some $620 CHEAPER than it did last year. In fact, this is the cheapest of all our US tours and represents unsurpassed value considering the wide array of specialist aviation centres visited. If you would like to enjoy the aviation holiday of a lifetime this July/August then call Torii Tours today on (02) 233 8500 for a full colour brochure and detailed itinerary. Also, as in previous years we have a comprehensive alternative itinerary for those who may wish to divert from things aeronautical from time to time.

buying invaluable time which allowed the build up of American forces. In August 1942 No 75 Squadron joined No 76’s Kittyhawks at Milne Bay where together they recorded a famous and hard fought victory against the Japanese.

The book deals with these actions, drawing on David Wilson’s own extensive knowledge of the air battles fought along with the reminiscences, diaries and letters of those involved. Some of Australia’s best known airmen are part of the story- the Jackson brothers, Truscott, Turnbull, Atherton and others- a story which is told intelligently and in a readable style. Essential reading for students of the RAAF in World War II Available from Banner Books, 308 Victoria St, Brunswick, 3056, $27. 50 including postage.

Learning to Fly Helicopters:

Lufthansa has been awarded the prestigious ‘Mercury Award’ by the International Catering Association for its leading role in the ‘in-flight service and environment’ category. Lufthansa has introduced gate buffets on domestic flights which allow passengers to select their meals before boarding, allowing the airline to reduce food wastage annually by an impressive 1,700 tonnes. In-flight garbage has a/so been reduced in the order of 700 tonnes by using reusable crockery in the place of disposable plastic, while the waste that now remains is collected and sorted separately for recycling. More than 90% of all material used aboard Lufthansa aircraft is now recyclable. Lufthansa flies to 195 ports in 88 countries, using over 260 aircraft. Expecting to post a group net loss of $A319 million for 1991, Lufthansa has placed a freeze on staffing levels in order to cut costs, although its network will continue to grow. (Lufthansa)

R Randall Padfield This is an excellent book written by an ex military helicopter pilot who has also gained considerable experience in civil operations.

The book is well set out, very readable, and covers just about every aspect of helicopter operations from the very basic to advanced. It is well illustrated with good clear diagrams to explain the principles of flight or manoeuvres under discussion. The lead in chapter is unusual in that it covers helicopter myths with the aim of dispelling some of the strange notions that still exist about the world of rotary flight.

In the following chapters, the author manages to make every page readable whilst covering all aspects of learning to fly. There are excellent chapters on emergencies, aircraft systems, human factors and safety, and a section on pilot/copilot relationships, worth reading for that alone. The book is another in the TAB Practical Flying Series and is available from Mc Graw Hill or any specialist aviation book shop.

Videos

Beech has reached a remarkable milestone having built 50,000 aircraft since its first aircraft was delivered in 1932. This impressive figure includes more than 4,500 King Airs delivered since 1964. The 50,000th aircraft was in fact a King Air C90 (pictured). Beech is one of the world’s leading aircraft manufacturers, its diverse product range including the Beechjet, King Air, Bonanza, Baron and the 1900 commuter. (Beechcraft)

Advantage Hornet/Eagle Country

Network Entertainment Two videos in the Network Entertainment range that also includes tapes featuring US Navy aircraft, the F-117A stealth fighter, F-14 and F-16 plus the history of the USAF Eagle Country is essentially a film essay of the F-15 Eagle at work with some worth-while in-air footage. Whilst interesting it would have seemed more logical if the his- tory of the type had been documented with an authoritative and interesting script to match the exciting visuals.

No such complaints with the Advantage Hornet tape as this effort features both a viable script and footage not seen before by this reviewer. Of particular interest is a relatively uncut segment featuring a solo airshow performance as seen through the HUD with the pilot grunting his way through an explanation of each manoeuvre. Interesting to say the least.

These two tapes are available from mid June through leading department stores and video outlets whilst the other titles will progressively become available later this year.
