Defence Update
The Pros and Cons of the Defence Force Structure Review
Most of the Royal Australian Air Force’s front line aircraft face obsolescence during the first decade of the next century, the recent Defence) Force Structure Review warns.
This is a major reason for the new initiatives the Force Structure Review proposed and had accepted by the Federal Government. This updated and revised Defence policy, which includes cuts of some 10,000 personnel in the permanent three Services; creation of a new Ready Reserve, mostly Army: better training and equipment for Reservists generally, the closure of some bases; and the commercialisation and contracting out of a range of support services, has yet to make an impact. As it is to be implemented over 10 years, perhaps the impact will be muted.
