Air Safety
Keep your mind on the job
I’m not saying where this happened; though it’s a long time ago, there might be people still around who’d put two and two together. But after seeing the story on wire strikes in the last issue, I thought readers might be interested in a variation on the same theme.
It was back when the then DC A were in a bit of a flap about Flying Doctor operations. It wasn’t long since Derby had lost an Anson in a thunderstorm during a mercy flight at night-and the pressure was on to re-equip. The Drover was supposed to be the answer but then its constant speed props played up and it had to be fitted with fixed pitch propellers- and after this it would only do on three Gipsy Majors what the old Dragon always did on two!
But the first of the new Yank light twins were coming on the market and our base had been persuaded to consider the Piper Apache. They even lent us their demonstrator so we could try it out on the job.
