First Raaf 707 Tanker Returns to No. 33 Squadron
The first Boeing 707 transport to be modified to provide the RAAF’s F-18 Hornet fighters with aerial refuelling is to be handed back to No. 33 Squadron during December.
Delays in carrying out the air-to-air refuelling work occurred because of design problems concerning the main fuel pump. The conversion project entails converting four of the RAAF’s six 707s to provide inflight refuelling for the new fighters. The contract is being carried out by Israeli Aircraft Industries {IAI), with Hawker de Havilland the nominated subcontractor for the integration work at Tullamarine airport, Melbourne.
