South Korea has selected the MDC F-18CID Hornet as its next generation fighter. The RoKAF will be aware 120 Hornets excited the enhanced safety margin through having two engines, Koreas overwater and mantIme requirements, the excellent MDC local industrial participation programme and the future growth potential of the F-18 as major reasons for choosing the Hornet over the GD F-16. MDC officials also cite Australia's experience with the aircraft as a major fillup in securing their second largest F-18 export order to date

Hornets for Korea:
The Republic of Korea Air Force has selected the McDonnell Douglas F-18 Hornet over the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon to fill its F-X fighter requirement.
The $US4bn deal will see the RoKAF receive 120 F-18s of which 12 will be delivered complete from McDonnell Douglas, 36 will be assembled in South Korea by Samsung Aerospace Industries from kits and the remainder will be built from scratch. Although the F-16 (which is already used by the RoKAF) met Korea’s needs, the F-18 was selected because it could better cope with the MiG-29s operated by North Korea, is more durable, has twin engined safety and maritime attack capability.
