A Message From the Publisher on How to Protect a Precious Natural Resource and in the Process Also Save Yourself Time and Money
No Australian wants to waste either their environment or their hard earned disposable income. So imagine the number of trees it takes to create seven tonnes of paper – large areas of beautiful forest inhabited by trees which took up to a decade to mature.
Now imagine them all felled for nothing, absolutely nothing! Pretty awful isn’t it? And what’s more, this is roughly the quantity of high quality imported paper stock that this magazine is forced to waste each year in order to cater for our newsagency sales. A waste that anybody who insists on purchasing their copy of Australian Aviation at the newsstand rather than by direct mail subscription is directly responsible for.

It’s not that the newsagency system is wasteful per se, it isn’t. In fact Australia has one of the most efficient newsagency systems in the world. Where the waste comes in is in ensuring that suficient magazines are distributed nationally to provide an effective degree of distribution so that you will be able to get a copy at a newsagency near you. So, in order to be able to sell three magazines at any agency, we have to distribute at least four. This is an industry average, and a high one at that. That wasted copy has to be printed, distributed and finally physically discarded (waste coples are recycled to make cardboard boxes-imagine up to 4,000 copies each issue pulped in this manner, it’s enough to make you cry at the sheer waste of it all).
The other point is that each newsstand purchaser is subsidising that wasted copy. Essentially he or she is not only wasting a valuable resource (which also erodes Australia’s foreign exchange reserves as our paper has to be imported from Scandinavia due to this quality of paper stock not being available locally) but they are also having to pay a hefty premium in order to have the magazine.
As this wastage cost us well in excess of $60,000 during 1988, just think of the saving we could offer YOU if you chose to subscribe direct.
