Defence Aspirations Scuttled in Frugal Budget
Peacetime is always a difficult time for the defence forces of any nation. A nation’s military of course is there to assure, as best as practical, the ongoing social standards and personal freedoms that exist within that nation. In peacetime however, the last thing that almost any political party wants is to accord more than the barest minimum to maintaining some form of regional credibility for their defence forces.
Australia is no stranger to this scenario. Though Australians have fought in more wars (6) than any almost other nation this past century, we have by and large since WW2 enjoyed a period of low real threat to our mainland that apart from our distant forays into Korea, Malaya and Vietnam has resulted in successive Defence Ministers usually being on the short end of the annual budgetary handouts.
