On The Airbands
The huge amount of mail from devoted ‘On the Airbands” readers has even stunned this writer; it’s really great to know that there are so many people getting so much pleasure from airband monitoring. Please keep the mail coming, as variety is the essence of the success of the series.
During July, HF monitors right around Australia heard Pan Am break the record for their longest flight, a total of 7,950 statute miles (6,900nm, 12,787km) with the aircraft operating non-stop from Melbourne to Los Angeles. The previous longest scheduled operation for the company was over a distance of 7,487 statute miles. The record-breaking flight occurred on July 2, flight number PA 816, naturally a Boeing 747SP. The elapsed flying time was 13 hours 57 minutes. The change in departure point was caused by the Airport Firefighters strike. I didn’t monitor the flight from the Australian end, but in fact saw the aircraft arrive in Los Angeles, as I was one of the hundreds of Sydney-bound airline passengers caught up in the turmoil caused by the strike.
An enquiry made by Stewart Murphy from Ipswich, Qld has reminded me to mention that listeners requiring to know the destinations and sector flight times for all the major airlines flying into Australia can obtain this information from the contents of the various airline World Timetables, available at travel agents or airline offices. If you’re resourceful enough, you can obtain the timetables of airlines that never see Australian shores, and keep abreast of destinations, aircraft equipment types used etc, for use with HF radio equipment. To answer your question Stewart relating to the type of aircraft used as “Norfolk 201″, it is a Super King Air.
