New Zealand Airship Project Prepares for Launch
Proposals dating back eight years to launch an airship-building company in Hamilton have reached a crucial point with the formation of a company called New Zealand Airship Industries Ltd. In late October, one of the three directors of the company, Mr Ossie James, unveiled plans for a non-rigid airship, NZ 001, on which it is hoped to start work in 1986. A sizeable part of the launching finance, which will amount to about $8 million, comes from the British company. Wren Skyships, whose managing director, Mr M. Wren, joins Mr James and Mr Pat Monk on the board of the Hamilton company.
NZ 001 will carry 34 passengers, or about 25 tonnes of freight. It will be powered by two 400 shp Allison 250 B17 turboprops, whose unducted propellers will be capable of vectoring through nearly 90 degrees.
