Update – Embraer Brasilia
Darwin to Sydney, against a headwind, in six hours and ten minutes in a ‘commuter’ aircraft is not a bad achievement. The commuter aircraft in question is Embraer’s EMB-120 Brasilia.
The Brasilia, registered PT-ZBB was actually the official rollout aircraft as prototype 02 and was visiting the region on a pre-Paris Air Show demonstration tour. The Darwin/Sydney dash, which incidentally was flown at long-range cruise settings, highlighted the dual personality of the Brasilia which also stacks up well as a corporate aircraft.
The Brasilia was launched as a definite programme by Embraer back in 1979. One of five ‘super commuters’, (the DHC Dash 8, Saab-Fairchild 340, ATR42 and CN-235 are the others) the Brasilia has been born into one of the most fiercely contested markets currently existing in aviation. Embraer estimates indicate a total market requirement for the 30/42-seat pressurised commuter aircraft of around 1500 units over the next ten years. The Brazilian firm hopes to capture around a quarter of this market.
