In Australian Service, Vickers Viscount Pt II
Part Nineteen in a Series Examining the Airliners That Established Civil Aviation in Australia
The period 1957/58 was a time of considerable change in Australian domestic aviation. During August 1957, the Directors of Australian National Airways agreed to an offer from Ansett Transport Industries to acquire ANA for 3. 3 million pounds, and this led to the formation of Ansett-ANA. ANA, although dominant in freight operations had been receiving a steadily declining share of passenger traffic.
The ANA DC-6/6B fleet were extremely fine aircraft but did not possess the passenger appeal of the Viscount. Ansett also purchased about 90,000 Butler shares from Bungana Investments Ply Ltd, a parallel ANA company. This acquisition together with 40,000 Butler shares already held by ANA, transferred 51% of Butler stock to Ansett. Complete control of Butler was eventually gained in February 1958.
