A massive Sea King helicopter of HS817 Squadron dwarfs a tiny Robinson R22 helicopter of Hellite Pty. Ltd. of Castle Hill, Sydney. The Sea Kings are an anti-submarine warfare aircraft and operate from their base at HMAS Albatross, Nowra, NSW. The crew of Sea King 05 were involved in exercises in the Sydney area, and took the opportunity to visit ex-squadron members now employed by Helite. The compact Robinson helicopter weighs only 650kg fully laden, equivalent to one-quarter of the 10-tonne Sea King's fuel capacity!

Department of Aviation Review Commences:
As a direct result of Dick Smith’s book, Two Years in the Aviation Hall of Doom, which is also being serialised in this magazine, the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Expenditure has decided to look into the matters raised in the book. Additionally, the Committee will also accept submissions from all people who feel they have a grievance towards the Department or who do not agree with aspects of its operations.
Written submissions are being sought but it is understood that the sub-committee may also hold public hearings at a later date. Once the report is finalised it will be tabled in Parliament by the Minister for Aviation, Mr Peter Morris who will list the recommendations made in the report. The Minister is then obliged to pursue recommendations unless the department in question can honestly and realistically prove that implementation of such policy would be detrimental to the running of the Department. While this could be a field day for Bruce Lloyd, the opposition spokesman on aviation (who is presently barely known in the industry) it should also provoke an unprecedented use of the sacred word ‘safety by DofA officers protecting their six o’clock! While a little different in basic concept to the ACORP (Aviation Committee of Review Proposal) proposal originally put forward by Dick Smith, the sub-committee hearings will hopefully achieve a similar outcome providing every facet of industry gets behind them with fully documented submissions. AOPA and the GAA are backing the hearings, as are most individuals though it is felt that some of the larger operators will be too afraid of the future. intimidation to ‘rock the boat to any extent.
