1984 proved to be a much better year for the majority of the Major airlines in our area. In comparison with the negative growth experienced in the industry for the previous twelve months, most of the airlines recorded rises in the major indicators for 1984.

In Australia, the domestic airlines’ total tonne-kilometres rose 6. 9% to 1053. 9 million, passenger kilometres rose 7% to 9967. 7 million and passengers carried rose 6. 5% to 10. 9 million. Good as these figures are it should be remembered that they are only a few points above those recorded in 1981 and in the case of passengers carried they are still short of the 1979 figure.

Confidence in the future can normally be seen in orders for new aircraft and at the moment airlines in Australia and New Zealand have on order or are taking delivery of AUD$2,000 million of new aircraft.
