Qantas Strives Ahead in Engineering Services

Not many airlines operate such a large number of ultralong-range sectors, nor are they based literally on the other side of the world. Few airlines are a full twenty-four hours away from the originating source of spares and fewer still get near the level of technical operating efficiency than our own international airline, Qantas, does.

The classic tyranny of distance and the need to ‘ultimately do it yourself has, over the past sixty-five years, forced Qantas to adopt the best methods of maintenance in an effort to attain the reliability necessary to ensure safety over the long and largely unfriendly route structure that the airline pioneered in those early decades. Today, of course, at forty-one thousand feet in a 747 on a flight that will literally take you halfway across the globe in one effortless hop, it is difficult to recall the operational difficulties that beset those who flew the flying boats, the Lancastrians and the early Connie. What is perhaps pleasant to reflect upon is that while the medium of travel has thankfully changed, the basic work ethic of quality and professionalism hasn’t.

It is no secret that Qantas has an unmatched international safety record. That this does not simply happen as a matter of coincidence year after year, is because its engineering support, its aircrew training and its overall operating philosophy are equally unmatched by any other international carrier. It is then not surprising to learn that Qantas, in 1984/85, hopes to earn a healthy $40m from the maintenance and support of other people’s aeroplanes.
