Both Beechcraft and Fairchild have been losers in Australia not accepting SFAR 41 aircraft. Both the Fairchild Metro 111, a safer and more powerful version of the Metro 11, which is presently used in Australian commuter operations, and the Beech 1900 Airliner (pictured) are taboo by our standards. Australia's 12,500Ib weight limit was originally introduced two generations ago as a rudimentary demarcation line between Lockheed Lodestars and DC-3 type aircraft. Today its continuance is only serving to reduce safety standards for the travelling public and cause unnecessary financial hardship for the marketers of such aircraft.

This article is the result of one of the hardest and least satisfying projects I have ever undertaken. Nevertheless, I believe I owe it to my country and our aviation industry to try to act as a catalyst in resolving the serious problems that exist in the Department of Aviation.
