The squadron ceased operating in 1968 and now returns to fill the gap left by No. 3 Squadron when that unit returns to Australia in late 1986 to equip with Hornets at Williamtown. No. 79 will be equipped with twelve Mirage fighters to fill the gap at Butterworth till routine F-18A Hornet. deployments commenced around 1988. No. 3 will meanwhile re-equip with Hornets through 1986/ 87, Williamtown-based No. 77through 1987/88 and Darwin-based No. 75 in 1988/89. The latter squadron was initially the first to convert but this was later changed owing to delays in getting RAAF Tindal completed.
