The Boeing 767 Revisited
A Thoroughbred Goes Smoothly Into Service
A full year has now elapsed since Ansett Airlines introduced the star aircraft of their fleet, the Boeing 767, into regular service. As was reported in a previous article in the September 1983 issue, Australian Aviation was on board the delivery flight of the first aircraft, VH-RMD, in June 1983 and also attended a pre-delivery seminar where various speakers had their say about the Boeing 767. There seemed no doubt that the aircraft was a highly efficient, comfortable technological step forward, but was unfortunate in arriving in Australia at a time of severe economic downturn. A basic fact of life in the airline industry is that an airliner, no matter how excellent it may be, cannot generate a consistent profit at a time of recession. At best, it can carry reduced available customs as economically as possible, but it can still lose money.
