On April 1, as a first step towards being sold to private ownership next year, British Airways will cease to be a State Corporation and become a public limited company with, like Qantas, all shares owned by the Government. Recently, 70 senior executives at BA were given their marching orders, to join 23,000 other staff who have been eased out over
the last six years. In the last two years, the airline has swung from losses to respectable profits which are rapidly dragging it back from a parlous financial position that would inevitably have spelt bankruptcy for a private company.
